"October. This is one of the peculiarly dangerous months to speculate in stocks. The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August, and February."

Surviving Black October

I know these are extraordinary times. Without the experience of a financial wizard or the years of education in economics, I can only relay to everyone some of what I learned over the past 30 years in business.

LMS started in my basement in 1979. I did not realize that the 22% interest rate a few years later on my first business loan was high, in fact it was my first loan and I was happy to get it. In 1987 I decided to go forward with the largest marketing plan/investment of my business life. Who knew that “Black Monday”, Oct 19th, was just around the corner. It turned into the fastest growing period of LMS, lasting until 1992.

Of course, the same could be said after 9/11, and my hope is that today, the October 2008 period will also be used to the advantages I can find in it.

I am building a group of short video clips that will review and outline a lot of our past and present techniques that got us through “hard times.” We are confident and, to some extent, excited about how the present situation will help us. FEAR and HUNGER are great motivators and allow pretty good leaders to really accomplish a lot. The present business climate has sharpened all of our senses and our adrenaline kick is way up there. Our workforce is ready for the task of redesigning the methods we will be using to compete in the future. Yes it is painful and yes some businesses will never recover, but the majority of us can come out of this stronger in the long run.

Please let me know if you are interested in viewing the series of videos since my scheduling will be based on interest levels. Many of us have gone through this, and I have been lucky enough to have maintained a technical business diary that really speaks to the methods we used to survive and grow. I am willing to share it if the interest is there. There is no obligation, just shoot me a fast email and I will let you know when the first of the clips become available.

Riding the Economic Rollercoaster

Stephen Minton, vice president, Worldwide IT Markets and Strategies, IDC, offers insight on how outsourcing can help you ride out the economic downturn—and maybe even gain a leg up on the competition along the way.

Rising gasoline prices. Falling consumer confidence. Subprime mortgages. Inflation. Budget cuts. Currency fluctuations. Floods, droughts and crop shortages. Each day's news seems to add to the torrent of challenges heading our way. No business is immune—but outsourcing can offer a way to leverage technology to help stem the negative tide.

Here, IDC's Stephen Minton shares his expert views and experience on the subject—and puts some useful perspective around when it does and does not make sense to consider outsourcing in today's volatile economic climate.

Recession. Downturn. Call it what you will—what's the impact on business decisions to outsource or buy IT services?

It's Your Choice
Your headache or theirs

Hear that sound? Feel the rumble? There is a geologic shift taking place under the feet of small and medium-sized companies and chances are you don't know it, yet. The ruckus is managed services. Their promise is to liberate you from the awful side of computer ownership.

"Awful? Define that, please." Fair enough.

aw•ful [aw-fuhl] – adjective If you don't have an IT Department chances are a smooth running, trouble-free network will be a temporary condition. 2) When something breaks someone has to fix it. 3) And, pay for it. 4) And, if that something gets in the way of running your business, you sleep less and the bottom line gets trashed. 5) If you do have an IT Department, you waste an expensive and valuable asset chasing around mundane tasks.
