Life After Wi-Max

Without getting into the details of the announced Sprint deal to light up our country with ubiquitous Internet bandwidth, we need to imagine what life will look like after “Google on your hip” happens.

Imagine moving Google that much closer to your inner self. It is bad enough that we run to Google for every last thing going on around us, but at least we are sometimes kept at a safe distance from it so we can pretend to exist like humans did for the past thousand years.

Remember when you could sit at a dinner table with your kids (long ago and far away) and actually tell them something without being challenged by real facts (courtesy of Google) that made your parenting look weak by the end of each sentence. When you could actually make a case or invent one if needed and everyone looked at you as the wise and powerful one. Today a quick break to the computer or a look up on their smart phone strips that from you. At least today the slow speed and small screens may limit the amount of ammunition that is in front of them at the point of engagement. What if they could Google at the speed of light, keeping their Google on the hip as deadly as any firearm? There they are armed with every fact and argument known to mankind. How do you defend against it?

Just like the gun equalized the human race, taking strength out of the human equation of power, Google coupled with major bandwidth will make life a 24/7 firefight, with arguments and a knowledge slugfest causing the nation to just spin off out of control.    Read More

Is It Time To Upgrade Your Firewall?

You've heard it before -- the only thing that is constant is change.  That statement seems to be particularly true of technology.  We want to share a announcement that we received recently from Sonicwall about their product line.  Many of you have been protecting your network for several years with their reliable firewall products.  But now, due to the ever-increasing sophistication of hackers, hacking tools and security threats, it has become necessary for Sonicwall to revamp their entire product line to combat these new dangers.  Read More

Virtualization Overview
by Jane Cage, COO, HTS

We live in a world that constantly forces us to “do more with less”. Employees are expected to be more efficient. Multi-function devices are becoming the standard on many desktops. We multi-task by answering email, talking on the phone and reviewing a spreadsheet – all at the same time.

We shouldn’t be surprised then that IT departments are asking the same of their fileservers. When server utilization gets

measured, we find that many servers have much more capacity than they actually use for the majority of the time. With so much excess capacity – why not run more than one server on a single machine? That’s what virtualization is all about -- one physical machine running more than one server operating system.

Virtualization is a “hot” technology right now and here are some of the reasons why:

  • Cost Savings – virtualization may allow you to consolidate multiple servers down to one. Not every server is a candidate to be virtualized but many can make the move successfully.

  • Ease of Deployment – An IT person can build a “standard” server in a virtual environment. Any time a new server is needed, a copy of the standard server can be deployed in minutes rather than hours.

  • Test Bench – If you are not sure if your existing software will run in a new operating system, why not use a virtual server for testing?

  • Disaster Recovery – When the unthinkable happens, recovery of a virtual machine may speed your time back to operations.

VMWare has been the leader in virtualization technology. This year, Microsoft is introducing Server 2008 which promises a wealth of features that will raise the bar. You’re sure to hear more about this exploding technology in the months to come. If you’re interested, contact your account rep for more information.
