Where were you the day the Internet died?

Not likely to happen? Just wait. The funny part is that the way it affects you will not be clear until it happens. Will the office be silent because nobody is working or is Facebook and You Tube not entertaining everyone? Will your mobile phone not have service because the lack of email has forced everyone to phone home ? Will the traffic on the roads double as everyone who remoted in or worked from the home drove in? Will everybody have a dazed and confused look as they realize how little they know and that with Google asleep, they may as well
be? Will every order you wish to place or track, or bank balance to transfer or check or stock to buy or sell go on hold? Of course. As every piece of personal communication fails, will you become instantly lonely, worried? Will your IP video surveillance of your vacation home go down, along with your alarms? In fact, no Internet, no control of the millions of devices that we monitor and control over the public Internet. And who can forget the millions of VPN based connections that we so cleverly use the Internet for so we could get away from paying the phone companies for expensive private lines? Yes, the day the Internet dies will be a very valuable one. It will reset our thinking of how far we have come and where we are going. It will show us how vulnerable we are, and help us plan a more resilient future. I hope it comes sooner than later.

The ranks of mobile workers are swelling, fueled by the wireless Internet, powerful handheld devices, VPNs (virtual private networks), and WLANs (wireless local area networks).

As many as nine out of every 10 employees now work from locations other than company headquarters, according to Nemertes Research, a New York market researcher that specializes in emerging technologies. In addition, some 40% to 70% of employees work in locations remote from their supervisors.     Read More
