Make Telecommuting Work

Making Telecommuting Work for your Business

Telecommuting has gotten a bad rap. Some say that employees can't be serious about their careers if they'd rather work from home. Others insist that work groups fall apart if team members aren't physically in the office.

But the bad rap may not hold: The International Telework Association & Council (ITAC) reports that the number of workers who telecommute at least some of the time (the preferred term today for many is the less-U.S.-centric "telework") tops 23 million, a number that continues to grow.     Read More

Instant Results

I want to thank all of you for taking a moment out of your busy day to read my ramblings. It s not for everyone, but my hope is that I inspire and even teach a little bit with each one.

Last week I took the youngest of my children, Justin on a one hour introduction to flying lesson. Many of you know I flew my own plane in the late 80 s for business and pleasure, and more recently my son and I took up small r/c model plane flying.
While at the flight school I met the individual who sold me my plane 20 years back and helped me with my training for my pilot license. While talking about the present generation of new pilots being trained he remarked that fewer were completing. The problem was the need for instant results, and little patience for the long training process.

I remarked how we see that every day in “our kids and he responded that many of the business men looking for pilot licenses had the same desire for “instant results .

Quickly the connection to technology formed in my mind. Clearly both I and my clients carried the increased expectation of having our technology tools immediately produce results for us, and also expected to be able to bypass long training and learning curves. Hearing that our lack of patience was not just aligned to our computers and connectivity tools, but it was a widespread part of our lives, made me feel a lot better. This independent confirmation that we are all rushing along, and cannot lose precious seconds gave me a real understanding of the day to day events that we live with.

The panic and stress in the voice of a client witnessing their e-mail going down for an hour or an Excel document opening slowly no longer made me feel guilty of not delivering great service. I realized that we were all now part of a “zero tolerance mentality that will forever require perfect response, and no lost time.

I realize that it is only when one appreciates the value of their technology investment that they can express such a need for operational excellence. A clear sign that you have successfully integrated technology into your life is the desire to get things running fast.

Today you no longer will accept lost productivity due to equipment failures. You now operate in an ultra productive, but highly stressed world. It won t go away, but understanding it is the first step in learning to live with it.

Have a happy and safe holiday season. Remember our holiday season hours remain 24/7/365. Every day, every minute, every second. When you need us we will be there.

Thank you from the LMS team.

Budgeting for 2008
by Heather Scheibelhut, Next Step Networking

“IT budgeting can t be that difficult, right? You just add up the cost of your computers. Simple! Oh wait, we have to factor in the cost of software. So it s still a piece of cake. Oh yea, what about staff training? And repairs? And tech support? And consulting fees? What happens if my server crashes?? AAAHHHHH!!!!! Will this nightmare ever end?      Read More
