Are You IT Strategic?
- Part II
By
Blake Britton, Vice President, AXXYS Technologies

Last
month we looked at questions to be asked when looking into
new or updated technologies for your business. These questions
focused on building a long term IT strategy rather than taking
care of the "now." Keep in mind the question to
be asked: What is the strategy of the business from an IT
perspective?
This
month we will look at three other technologies that represent
growing trends within the technology sector: Data Backup,
Data Storage, and Workstations.
Data
Backup: The number one reason business owners and C-Level
personnel lose sleep at night: the backup. Data backup is
the process of technology copying important information to
disk, tape, or even CD/DVD. Since companies rely more and
more on technology to run their business, it is important
to know that their data is stable and recovery will be as
painless as possible. However, this depends heavily on the
technology used for this important task. Questions to ask
when considering a new or updated solution:

Can
Technology
Teach
Us Anything?
After spending
6 years as a member of the Commack Long Island school
board, I developed a healthy respect and fear of the
direction our school systems are going in.
This
month s article is a bit biased since I have spent 28
years in business for myself learning how to watch every
penny spent, and optimizing every asset owned. With amazement
I watch our educational system waste resources and fail
to utilize the same tools businesses have adapted. |

Every day we see how our businesses
must look at every conceivable option that is available
to determine how to bring value to our customers. We
take in and integrate all the information around us
and make decisions that ultimately will allow us to
become better at whatever we do in a competitive marketplace.
While almost every single form of business
has evolved and leveraged technology to make changes
in how they work, our school systems have stayed stagnant
in their approach to teaching. Yes, the delivery of
information and the tools used have taken on a high
tech profile, but the fundamentals have only been slightly
changed. While access to information has accelerated,
the individual student has been put into more structured
and controlled environments.
Standards and metrics force them to
operate in a rigid mode through a system that has less
flexibility than the ones we went through 50 years ago.
At the same time our connected Internet based world
can deliver customized education paths for each and
every child. What is delivered by technology is information,
faster and more accurately than ever before. Technology
as a tool is delivering so much “knowledge so quickly
that even the most capable child is not developing the
needed problem solving skills earlier generations excelled
at.
The real value of technology is in
the ease of access of information. Why are we not opening
up our ways of teaching to allow the wide range of human
capability to operate un-tethered?
Technology by itself can teach us little,
but it can free us to learn at unimaginable speeds.
For our country to gain the competitive advantage it
once held we have to unleash the American spirit that
has been bottled up. Technology has put the rest of
the world on an equal footing with us when it comes
to processing and acquiring information. To win in this
new game you must re-kindle creativity and allow the
students true passion to drive their direction. Ours
schools must refocus on this and let the technology
find its correct place in an educational system that
puts the student in control of his future. We owe it
to our kids.
